I’ll be showing my large Iowa piece in the NARS’ exhibition ‘Bridges, Trees, Skulls, Pies & other Treasure Trails’ come October. You can find their website here, but I’ve listed the details below.

Show: October 1 – October 23, 2011

“New York Art Residency & Studios (NARS) Foundation is proud to present its annual fall exhibition of thirty five NARS studio artists. “Bridges, Trees, Skulls, Pies & other Treasure Trails” will include prints, collages, paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs that explore a wide range of subject matters and styles. From delicate geometric abstractions that examine the purity of form to explosive expressions of color that strive to strike a balance between emotion and intellect, the audience will be able to enjoy a treasure hunt through the winding hallways and the gallery space in search of their perfect treasure. Some will marvel at the meticulous rendering of the hair and expression of the brow while others find delight in the gestural strokes and splatters. From abandoned buildings and fences to tranquil bodies of water to intriguing fables and stories to delicious pies, the exhibition will surely delight those who dare to venture down the halls of the NARS Foundation.”

‘Fragmentation’, and new work

I’m going to be participating in a group show called ‘Fragmentation’, opening September 7th. This is a show done entirely with SVA graduates, and the idea was to create a show that unified a group of artists coming from disparate backgrounds and disciplines while still recognizing the autonomy of each. To reach this goal, the artists have been split into 9 different galleries throughout the Lower East Side. There is a map that is the link through which a visitor is meant to approach the show– traveling from venue to venue. You’ll be able to grab a physical copy at any of the venues. I’ll be showing a few newer pieces that I have (just now!) put on my website for your digital pleasure. I’ll be showing at Krause Gallery, and the reception will be from 6-9pm.

Art Bridge

One of the problems with large work is getting it places. I was notified that I was to be included in ‘ArtBridge’s’ Fall 2011 exhibition, and they needed Iowa III to photograph it. As I don’t have a car and the piece is 5x7ft, it was no easy task getting it from Brooklyn to Manhatten. Thanks to some careful rolling and a patient husband, we made it ok, despite trains and rush hour and countless jokes revolving around the theme of stuffing pot into the paper and making a large joint (hardy har!).

Anyway, I’m pretty excited to be involved with them. They take artists’ work, photograph it, and then blow it up to 20ft long banners to decorate scaffolding or other construction eyesores. This particular project is a collection of 20 artists called, ‘Works in Progress’. It goes up in Downtown Brooklyn sometime in October. I’ll update my website once I know more details.

Chain Letter Exhibition

I’m honored to have been invited to participate in a one-night show called Chain Letter in Boston. “Chain Letter is a global group show wherein 10 artists have been invited to participate. Those 10 then invite 10 artists that they admire. Those 10 invite 10 more and so on. This cycle continues for 30 days, then there are multiple shows at multiple venues across the world. The result is an exponentially massive, artist-curated group show based entirely on admiration.” It sounds large, and it sounds fun. I’ll post pictures as they come back to me!

‘Grey Matter’ opening at the Painting Center

Iowa I will be shown in The Painting Center’s show ‘Grey Matter’. The reception is June 23rd from 6 – 8 pm on W 27th Street. I’m very excited to be a part of this show–the artists they have chose are spectacular. I hope to see you-all at the opening!

Far too quickly two years have flown by and I find myself on the brink of graduating. This is my last ‘Open Studios’, and thus the last chance you’ll have to see where I’ve been more-or-less living since arriving in NYC. I just finished a large piece (see below) that I’ll be showing for the first time. I hope to see you all there, but if you can’t make it, please check out the new piece on my website.

“Exit” Thesis Show

Open Studios

Dear friends, family, and supporters,

As most of you know, I’m currently entering the last phase of my graduate career. This last year has been a time of great change for me, thanks in large part to the amazing teachers and artists that I have had the pleasure of working with since moving to New York. Last year brought about the evolution of my work from photo-related images to large scale watercolor drawings. I’m pleased with my recent work, and am very much looking forward to seeing where it goes in the future.

I have a few shows coming up. SVA is holding graduate open studios next week and I’ll be there for the entire evening of the reception (see flyer below). Additionally, I’ll be showing in the second senior show. I’ll post the invite upon receiving it, but if you would like to save the date, the reception will be on Thursday, March 3rd. Finally, there will be a second open studios on April 28th. I hope you will be able to make it to some of these, but as usual, I will post the work that I show on my website. If you can’t make it to this round of open studios, you can view the work digitally here.

April 29 through May 1, 2010. The Reception will be held April 29, from 5-9PM.

This semester has been quite turbulent for me–Since graduating from PNCA, I’ve been struggling to ‘find myself’ artistically. I was feeling as though I had to find a way to do art in a more direct manner. Photography was a bit too removed from the materials; I yearned to CREATE something with my hands. Over the past year, this has taken on multiple forms, from stop-motion animation to small moquettes that I would then photograph.

Fairly recently, I rediscovered drawing. At this moment, I have cast aside photography and been focused on developing this new-found interest. And, so, at open studios the primary focus will be on the drawings. Those of you that show up will get a sneak peek, of sorts.
